WITH ALL DEFERENCE TO HER PEEPS IN WASHINGTON, D.C., WHO’VE BEEN SLAMMED BY SNOW THIS WEEK, Miss Jo would like to report from her left coast weather universe where El Niño has blissfully taken hold this winter rainy season.
Every week or so San Francisco’s usual soggy winter downpours and overcast gloom have been interrupted by several days of throw-the-windows-open, let’s-get-outside weather, like this weekend.
El Niño also brings big waves, so Miss Jo and Jeff went to Ocean Beach today to check some out as the sun was starting to peak through an hour before sunset.
Surf conditions are so ideal that an hour south near Half Moon Bay, Mavericks has been announced for Saturday, giving boarders from around the world notice that it’s time to test the famously treacherous winter breakers off Pillar Point.
UPDATE SATURDAY 2/13/10 – This year’s Mavericks proved to be beyond awesome with waves exceeding 50 feet, as watched by the two Js online. Riveting. SF Chronicle photographer Carlos Avila Gonzalez snapped the shot, above, of South African Chris Bertish’s $50,000 first-place run.
(This video grabbed off YouTube, below, was taken recently at the Mavericks site and shows how surfers are digging El Niño. The waves look to be half the size of those during Saturday’s competition)
