EXCEPT FOR THE PHOTOS OF CALLA LILIES TAKEN IN HER BACK YARD, MISS JO SNAPPED THESE SF FLOWERS while walking down the 29th Street hill from Diamond Heights to Noe Valley, and then back to Glen Park via Chenery Street.
San Francisco gardens are shaped by three things: limited space, dry terrain— the city’s built on mostly ocean and bay bluffs, cliffs and in many cases, dunes— and its breezy, foggy and intensely sunny coastal California climate.
Needless to say, the soil and growing conditions suck.
SF’s spring really starts in December, when the rainy season takes off after six months or so of no rainfall. By April, bright flowers seem to be popping up everywhere there’s room to spare in the densely settled city.

… sigh … I get homesick for SF whenever I see calla lilies. your photos are lovely. thanks so much.
Wow! Great photos as always from Miss Jo! Spring has really sprung!
Beautiful…we’re starting to bloom here, too. Finally!
Everything is so beautifully in bloom in your area. The east coast has a couple of brave crocus and daffodils peeking out, but we are still mostly leafless and barren. It’s encouraging to see how spring has arrived in places like Texas and California. After a very snowbound winter, I am really excited about the promise of spring flowers.
I love the flowers that look like trumpets hanging upside down. There are some of these plants in Fresno but they are not as heavy laden as this one.
