MISS JO GOT INSPIRED TO RESUME HER URBAN CYCLING AFTER seeing this little locked bike parked by a commuter in Glen Canyon Park.
Curious about the status of biking in the city, she took a quick look-see at the SF Bicycle Coalition web page, where she learned there are 120,000 bicyclists peddling around town. The 2012 municipal goal is for around 200,000, or 25 percent, of Fog City citizenry to bike instead of drive.
The latest bike lot opened this month at the Saturday Farmer’s Market @ the Ferry Building, hosted by the coalition. Also in May, the City installed a handful of on-street bike racks in former parking spaces along the Mission’s busy Valencia Street corridor and more are to be installed across the City. Additionally, more and improved bike lanes are being promised to complete a citywide biking network.
Miss Jo’s snaps of bicyclists in the flat Mission make switching to two wheels to traverse SF’s famous hills look deceptively easy…..Now if the City can just ditch the hazardous, accident-prone fleet is way too wide to nimbly– and safely— share the City’s narrow, congested traffic lanes, particularly the double-length accordion buses. New people movers please.
